A Compassionate and Effective Solution to Homelessness in Norman
Homelessness in Norman is not a problem we can ignore, nor is it one we can solve by treating people like “vermin” or “plagues” to be shipped off to other cities. These are people—our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and neighbors—who deserve dignity, respect, and a real opportunity to rebuild their lives.
But ignoring the issue or implementing punitive “tough on homelessness” policies won’t work. It’s time for Norman to lead with compassion, innovation, and action.
A Leadership Role for the City
The City of Norman must take a leadership role—not by spending excessive taxpayer money or “enabling” the problem, but by becoming a connector and facilitator. We will bring together nonprofits, churches, private businesses, and community members to focus resources and energy on outside-the-box solutions. We will address root causes of homelessness, like trauma, mental health struggles, and addiction, instead of just applying temporary fixes.
The Phoenix Camps: A Hand Up, Not a Handout
Our innovative solution begins with Phoenix Camps—safe, supportive communities on private land where homeless individuals can:
- Heal from trauma in a stable, secure environment.
- Learn life and work skills to regain independence.
- Access resources, such as help with obtaining driver’s licenses, resolving court issues, and finding jobs.
- Help each other: By fostering a community where “homeless help homeless,” we empower individuals to rebuild their lives and lift each other up.
- These camps won’t be shelters; they will be a stepping stone. Residents will participate in the upkeep and operation of the camps, learning valuable skills while giving back to the community.
Addressing Crime and Accountability
We know that not all homeless individuals want help unfortunately. For those who refuse assistance and engage in criminal activity, we will work with city and county law enforcement agencies and courts to hold them accountable. Those who commit crimes will face prosecution to the full extent of the law. Our system will distinguish between individuals who are ready and willing take personal responsibility for their lives and accept a hand up (not a hand out) and those who are not.
A Trauma-Informed Approach
At the core of homelessness lies trauma—the kind many of us cannot imagine. Every day on the streets brings new challenges that reinforce this cycle of pain. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that healing trauma is the first step toward recovery. By partnering with experts, listening to those with lived experience, and integrating mental health and addiction resources into our solutions, we can address these underlying issues and create lasting change.
A Unified Effort for a Stronger Norman
The City of Norman doesn’t need to solve this problem alone, but it must lead the charge by:
- Unifying stakeholders: Nonprofits, faith-based groups, businesses, and individuals can accomplish more together than separately.
- Focusing on sustainable solutions: Teaching people to fish, not just handing out fish.
- Building hope: Transforming lives through compassion and empowerment.
Homelessness isn’t an easy issue, but with innovative ideas and a united community effort, we can make real progress. Together, we can give people the tools they need to rise from the ashes and build a stronger Norman for everyone.
