Protecting Norman from the Proposed Turnpike
The proposed turnpike through Norman, near Lake Thunderbird, has sparked significant concern in our community—and for good reason. While there may be some benefits to improved transportation infrastructure, the costs to our environment, local landowners, and way of life far outweigh them.
A Threat to Our Environment: Lake Thunderbird and its surrounding wilderness are treasures we must protect. The turnpike would disrupt this fragile ecosystem, impacting wildlife and potentially harming water quality. If the turnpike moves forward, I will advocate for wildlife bridges and other measures to minimize harm to local species and ensure that construction is closely monitored to prevent environmental degradation.
Respecting Landowners: Many of the properties affected by this project have been in families for generations. The use of eminent domain to take land for this turnpike is deeply troubling. I believe state law should be changed to limit the use of eminent domain for projects like this, ensuring greater fairness and respect for property owners.
We Don’t Need This Turnpike: While some argue that the turnpike is a “done deal,” I believe it’s worth questioning whether we need it at all. Forever tolls are a burden on families, and the promises of reduced costs often don’t hold true. Norman deserves solutions that align with our values, not unnecessary projects that disrupt our community.
As we move forward, I will fight to protect our environment, stand up for landowners, and ensure that Norman’s voice is heard every step of the way.
